We had the good fortune of connecting with Meg Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Meg Miller is an award-winning Environmental/Interior Designer (8X Best of Houzz winner) and Fine Artist who transforms residential and commercial spaces one creative twist at a time.

“Hi Meg, how do you think about risk?

I believe that we’re all meant to re-invent ourselves, and to never stop seeking and growing. I’ve evolved into many different roles and careers in my life, even though I wasn’t technically trained in most of them. It’s important to be fluid and dive into that which you’re passionate about, even if you don’t know what you’re doing or where it will lead you. If you let go of your attachment to an outcome, and authentically explore, play, be inventive and curious, you will build a knowledge base and a momentum that grows.

If someone would have told me in my 20’s while I was working in advertising, that I’d become a professional artist, designer and energy healing practitioner, I would have thought they were nuts. There’s a quote that says “Go As The Way Opens,” and that’s what I’ve done.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

My background is in advertising, so I’m selftaught in both art and design. I dove into both fields organically, out of my love for aesthetics and all things creative. Everything I know comes from doing lots of research (it never stops,) on-the-job experience, intuition, and being passionate about what makes great design, old and new. Playing with color is inspiring, even if it’s neutral (black and white are colors too!) I’m also inspired by classic modern

EVERYTHING (1930’s -1950’s,) and layering my design with art and “mixed media found objects.” I believe in eclectic styling so there’s always the right balance of materials, styles, colors, textures, and interesting, one-of-a-kind pieces. I also seek out the right balance of opposites (vintage/modern, matte/gloss, etc…) I’ve come to appreciate my lack of training in both art and design. It allows me the freedom to create without overthinking things, and from an intuitive, playful place. It allows me to explore possibilities that aren’t in the rulebooks and to never settle for the ordinary or the expected. This takes twice as much time to come up with creative solutions that you won’t see everywhere, but it’s worth it. My process is also very fluid and evolves as the project evolves. I often procure or make things for one spot, and they end up working better in another spot. So I go with it. I don’t work with formulas or within a rigid plan. It requires a lot of trust from my clients, but so far so good! I’m lucky that they want to go on the adventure with me.
